Eagle-Eye Cherry – Desireless: (1999)
Eagle-Eye Cherry. A name you either haven’t heard of for a very long time, or a name you’ve never heard of at all. In 1989 his older sister Neneh Cherry had a hit with the song, “Buffalo Stance.” Ten years later in ’99, little brother came along with his debut album, “Desireless.”
The opening track, “Save Tonight,” saw some play on what was left of MTV by ’99, as well as some turns on the radio.
Not exactly sure why I ever bought this CD. I liked the aforementioned single, but not enough to buy the album. Perhaps that was in the days of BMG mail-in CD service, where you could snare like 10 CDs for the price of one.
Whatever the reason, “Desireless” turned into a pleasant surprise. Nearly all of the 12 tracks are not only listenable, but actually good. Eagle-Eye’s versatile talents were clearly on display here. The album did reasonably well, selling platinum once over in the US.
He popped up a few years later, performing a track on Santana’s legendary “Supernatural” album. Then the world never heard from him again. He’s still around, continuing to work, but nothing caught my attention following his very solid debut.
